Players can access several alternative builds of Unturned through Steam Betas (also known as "Branches"). These builds include the public default branch (the current version of the game), older versions of the game, and the occasional sneak peek of upcoming version(s).
View the game's available branches and switch between them in Steam by:
- Right-click Unturned in your Steam Library
- Click Properties
- Select the Betas tab
- Select any beta from the dropdown for Steam to queue the download and installation
Understand that older versions of the game may not perform as expected. When filing a bug report, please do so for the latest version(s) of the game!
Preview branch
The "preview" branch is used to playtest upcoming updates. After an update releases, it will usually match the public branch until the next game update is ready for playtesting. Changelogs for the preview branch can be found here: Preview branch.
Archived version branches
Listed in reverse chronological order, the other options are:
- 32bit-windows: version 3.22.14.2. This is the final 32-bit Windows version with multiplayer support. If you have a 32-bit Windows PC you can play multiplayer on this older version by hosting a dedicated server on this branch.
- unity-2019: version 3.22.10.1. This is the final version using Unity 2019 before the update to Unity 2020. You can use this branch to play mods that are incompatible with newer versions of Unity.
- unity-2018: version 3.20.13.2. This is the final version using Unity 2018 before the update to Unity 2019. You can use this branch to play mods that are incompatible with newer versions of Unity.
- unity-2017.4: version 3.19.15.0. This is the final version using Unity 2017 before the update to Unity 2018. You can use this branch to play mods that are incompatible with newer versions of Unity.
- unity-5.5: version 3.27.2.1. This is the final version using Unity 5 before the update to Unity 2017. The version number looks newer because it was before the second digit of the version number represented the release year. You can use this branch to play mods that are incompatible with newer versions of Unity.
- classic: version 2.2.5. This is the final update to the 2.x version of Unturned that first launched into Steam Early Access in 2014. i.e., the final 2.x update before 3.x replaced it on the main branch.
- antique: version 1.1. This is the browser edition of the game available on the SDG website before 2.x began development.
The "classic" and "antique" versions of the game do not include the BattlEye Anti-Cheat. This means you are unable to launch the game with BattlEye enabled, and trying to do so will result in an error message of "Missing game executable" as Steam will be unable to find the Unturned_BE.exe file.
To play those versions of the game, you need to launch without BattlEye Anti-Cheat enabled. You can configure this from the game's launch options, or you can manually navigate to the game directory and launch Unturned.exe instead.
How do I get back to the current default public version?
- Right-click Unturned in your Steam Library
- Click Properties
- Select the Betas tab
- From the dropdown select "None"
Can servers be hosted using a beta version?
Yes. SteamCMD has an option to specify the beta by name when downloading the dedicated server.
For example to download the preview branch run:
app_update 1110390 -beta preview
