This article explains a few ways to free up RAM for the game. Running out of RAM is the most common cause of crashes in Unturned especially on 32-bit systems with only 4 GB available.
Temporarily disable all workshop files
To quickly check whether disabling subscribed workshop files will help, you can temporarily disable all of them with this launch option:
- Right-click Unturned in your Steam Library
- Select Properties... to open the General tab
- Find the Launch Options field
- Type "-NoWorkshopSubscriptions" without quotes
Managing unused workshop files
You can view all of your Unturned workshop subscriptions here: https://steamcommunity.com/my/myworkshopfiles/?appid=304930&browsefilter=mysubscriptions
Unsubscribing from workshop files you aren't using is recommended, but if you would like to save your subscriptions for later you can disable them individually in the main menu:
- Open the Unturned main menu
- Click Workshop
- Click Manage Subscriptions
- Uncheck any files you are not using. They will be ignored the next time you launch the game.
Disabling unused background applications
Even with no windows open there can be applications running in the background. It may be worth reviewing the processes running on your computer to check their RAM usage. For example other launchers like Origin and Epic Games run in the background by default to download updates.
On Windows you can use the Task Manager to sort apps by their RAM usage:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager
- Click More details in the lower-left
- Click the top of the Memory column to sort RAM usage
- Don't kill processes if you don't know what they are! For the purposes of this article the list is a reference to find apps you installed which are using RAM in the background.
